In January of 1994 we started up our record label and distribution company, Creative Vibes. Inspired purely by music, we set out to make sure that music shops, music media and above all, music lovers got to hear and learn about the many brilliant, but non-mainstream artists from all over the world, including and especially those on home soil.
We championed the Japanese Acid Jazz sound of Mondo Grosso, UFO, Kyoto Jazz Massive and Soul Bossa Trio, as well as the Brit New Jazz of Down To The Bone and the entire Internal Bass label. We picked up the Ninja Tune label and saw it through those all important first 10 years of life, taking it from the quiet underground to loud minority and beyond, as we did with the Compost label. About 6 months after we released Super Discount we started getting demos from Australian dance and jazz artists with a distinctly French-touch, letting us know that the good stuff was working its magic and helping our own scene to develop. Licensing totally unknown acts from Sweden is not exactly a formula for success in the Australian music industry, especially if the act sings in Swedish, but we still thought Datarock and Familjen made worthy tracks and so did the people at radio, the tour promoters and the listening public! Something about the Tru Thoughts label turned us on so we told everyone who would listen about the label and now names like Alice Russell, Quantic and The Bamboos are part of our music lexicon.
At the time it just seemed like a "good idea" and something we "really needed to do", but in retrospect we are humbled by the fact that we were privileged to work with some of the finest Australian talent and to release their early (in many cases the first) recordings. A sample of that list includes Soup, Moonrock (Illpickle and Katalyst), Tyrone and Katie Noonan, Dhama Bums (Nick Toth and Mako), Eon, Multiball, Sheriff Lindo, Jeff Dread, Ollo, The Bird, Superfluid, Duosseudo, The New Black and Gotye.
Between us, the artists and the labels we work with we've got airplay, gigs, reviews, even nominations and awards including those from DMA (Dance Music Awards, 4 times nominated and twice winner of Best Independent Label), ARIA and AIR. Surely we have changed the Australian soundscape!
We're hugely proud of the work we've done over the past decade and a half. Sadly though, as a truly independent company we just can't compete with large companies and multinational companies supplying everything from music to computers and electrical items, to give retailers what they now need to stay in business and sell good music at the same time.
The majority of our business is in imported music which has always funded our investments in emerging, Australian artists. Because of the recent, drastic drop in the value of the Australian dollar, combined with the spiralling demand for discounts and deals, we can't get the margin out of our imports to sustain the development of our local releases. (Of course we would have appreciate the Australian dollar dropping so drastically and affecting all our our imported CDs BEFORE we moved to our new St Peters warehouse!)
It will take us a couple of months to help our labels and artists find new homes, pack everything up, collect the money our customers owe to us and distribute it out to our artists and suppliers, but we'll conduct the wind up as quickly and as efficiently as possible. As always, we are aware that we are dealing with people's careers and their art so we will make the changes as smoothly as we can and can be contacted at our St Peters office and warehouse.
WE WILL KEEP SHIPPING THROUGH DECEMBER. Some titles/labels may be temporarily unavailable during January, until out suppliers meet with and choose a new Australian distributor at the annual MIDEM conference at the end of January. Many Australian distributors have over the past 15 years expressed interest in all our labels so any break in supply will definitely only be temporary. It is still probably a good idea to stock up on priority titles now to carry you through till February.
We now look forward to new challenges, but not without thanking those of you who have supported us and been so great for the past 15 years.
Gordon Henderson, Peter Pasqual and Heidi Pasqual.
To celebrate the sounds of the Creative Vibes label, Groupie Magazine and CVibes have teamed up for a night of top tunes, great company and musical goodness. See Meem perform live, Circle and The Watt Riot (who have toured with the likes of Eagles Of Death Metal and were Unearthed by Triple J) and Groupie DJ, Michaella Solar-March.
Loreena McKennitt’s new album, “A Midwinter Night’s Dream” is now available on CD plus Limited edition CD / DVD Set and a Deluxe Limited Edition 2008- 2009 Gift Box which also includes Christmas ornaments and postcards.
With each track, the musical flow of Samsara Lounge is reincarnated into a new, smooth, ethnic groove. Throughout this journey, rich, succulent tones of India, Morocco and Tibet flow through the grooving beats of electronica. The musicians spin together a surreal world that brings each listener through their own journey of Samsara.
Buddha-bar Travel Impressions is a new Buddha-bar travel invitation through far away lands - India, Vietnam, Japan, and Indonesia. The CD “Inner Trip” and DVD “Travel” take you on an exotic and spiritual escape, a fantastic inner trip, in a sophisticated atmosphere, with vibrating and colourful sounds…..
Hailing from Melbourne’s inner city, The New Black have spent most of 2008 recording the much anticipated debut album, A Young Man’s Death. The album was recorded and produced in Melbourne and later mixed in New York and Melbourne. The album leaps out with blazing guitars, gritty bass lines and a plethora of vocal harmonies and hooks.
We Are One is the debut album from Melbourne based DJ’s and producers, Duosseudo. Whilst evoking comparisons to the likes of the Potbelleez and Sneaky Sound system, Duosseudo elude definition and have forged their own explosive sound in a sometimes lacklustre market.
After more than two years of touring with the likes of The Decemberists, Broken Social Scene and Tapes n Tapes, and having gained and lost a few members, LAND OF TALK retired to their hometown of Montreal to roll tape on a batch of new songs, resulting in the epic LP, Some Are Lakes.
TANOU, as they are affectionately called, are an upcoming unique, British seven piece whose lyrical mastery and indie sensibility takes you on a grandiose voyage of smart lyrics and anthemic euphoric pop sounds. “No matter how simple or complex, songs are maps to places that people can’t physically go, escape plans to take us away from the towns and cities that suffocate us.” And they do just that.
Underground Railroad are set to release their much anticipated sophomore release Sticks And Stones – a ferocious squall of a record crystallising the band’s love for post-punk and New York’s Nu Wave scene. Death Cab For Cutie have praised the band in every recent interview, and music magazines on a global scale are more than a little excited about the trio, who have toured with the likes of Dinosaur Jnr and Nada Surf.
FOURTH FLOOR COLLAPSE express themselves with beauty and intensity, bringing light and shade, drama and warmth, sadness and joy to this lush musical canvas. Victoria is the band's refreshingly unique and epic fourth album, mixed in Perth at Debaser Studios by Andy Lawson (Little Birdy, Eskimo Joe & End of Fashion) and Joel Quartermain (Eskimo Joe).
Your Name In My Skin is the debut EP from Melbourne indie/pop rockers, ARMEN FIRMAN. Mixed by Franc Tetaz (Gotye, Lior) with the production assistance of Wally DeBacker (Gotye), this remarkable recording provides a brief insight into one of Australia's up and coming indie bands.
The Watt Riot belt out high voltage, rock'n'roll tracks that are stained with the hard edge of post-punk & the grit of dirty blues. Their tunes are filled with blistering guitar hooks, screaming vocals & hair flickin' rhythms. This band gets the punters tapping their hi-tops all over the dance floor & yelling for more!
For some, the Scott Burns experience started with the 2006 breakthrough demo 'Seven Day Sessions: The Demonstration', for others it was a little further back in the day with his cyphers and fierce rap battles around the Sydney Hip-hop scene. For others, 'Day 1' will be the beginning, whatever the case know that Scott Burns is not the new kid on this block.
BUTTAH is an Australian emcee representing the Australian's far north. Hau Latukefu says: "This dude sounds like he has been doing his thing for a while. His flow is tight, lyrics well thought out and delivered. Buttah also has good dynamics which, quite frankly, is not part of a lot MC's repertoires in this country... he has similar stylings to Suffa (Hilltop Hoods) - nice one bruva."
The masters of super-heavy, raw and upfront drum-break driven grooves are back with a bigger sound and The Bamboos brand of swinging soul, and finger snapping funk. The Bamboos latest offering is the sound of a collective who continue to develop, producing a rounded and more refined end result than previous releases.
Compiled and produced with the assistance of Peter himself, this special four disc set features the very best of Peter Green’s music, drawn from all stages of his career. It’s the ultimate Peter Green collection, the essential retrospective of a British guitar legend.
