In 2000 Gerard received a batchelor of music degree from the Sydney Conservatorium after intensive piano study with legendary pianist Mike Nock.

New Zealander Gerard Masters moved to Sydney in 1999. He performs regularly at Sydney’s top music venues and has also performed at the Australian International Jazz Festival, The Sydney Festival, the Melbourne International Jazz Festival, The Wangaratta National Jazz Festival, the St Kilda Festival, The Tauranga National Jazz Festival and the Christchurch Arts Festival. Gerard has studied extensively with Doug Caldwell and Mike Nock, two of New Zealands most well known jazz pianists. In September of 2001 Gerard competed in the Jazz Hoeilaart Competition in Belgium and gained third place as part of the Willow Neilson Quartet. He has recently been commissioned to write a piece of music for the Mike Nock Big Small Band.

QUOTES

"Masters has formed a trio of exciting soloists and exciting collaborators. He is an imaginative deconstructionist ... the room was electrified by the sense that anything could happen"
John Shand
Sydney Morning Herald

"Masters touch on piano is absolutely silken, and this subtle, calm approach to the music is well matched by his collaborators Brett Hirst and Nick McBride. Masters does not look for the easy option when unfolding his narratives, but nor does he go all complicated for the sake of it "
Craig N. Pearce
