CD1: Heroines

The face might be that of Aishwarya Rai, a former Miss World sometimes tagged: “the most beautiful face on the globe”; or perhaps Nargis, who self-assuredly dominated the 50s; or maybe Meena Kumari, a tragedienne whose on-screen image mirrored her personal life. But the voices will be of Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle, the elder and younger sisters who between them have dominated Bollywood across the decades; or Shreya Ghosal, Alka Yagnik and Chitra, modern-day challengers to that dominance.

CD2: Heroes

When a song is set to a scene – or sometimes the other way round – the process is called “picturisation”. Here songs are picturised on heroes such as Amitabh Bachchan who, with his trademark dark hair and white beard, is now an elder-statesman and ambassador for Bollywood; or actor/director Raj Kapoor, whose work was idolised in the USSR and the Middle East; or Sharukh Khan, ‘King Khan; today’s most in-demand star. But the voices are the ‘playback singers’ such as Mohd.Rafi, who strode the music scene like a colossus; or Kishore Kumar, the most naturally gifted artiste of his generation; or Mukesh, whose sentimental refrains attracted cult following.

CD3: … and Lovers

Without doubt love songs, whether sung by hero, heroine or as duets, are the mainstay of the genre and the very reason “Bollywood” has thrived. How can you possibly serenade your beloved without breaking into song? Behind the scenes, the stars and singers also rely upon each other for their success and it’s not unusual for a song in an otherwise lacklustre film to rescue that film. Today, in a digital age, Bollywood regularly revisits its past by remixing classic songs and presenting them to a young audience. Aesthetic arguments aside, this only goes to prove - it’s the song that lasts for ever.
