BASEMENT DIGS brings you another fantastic release from the L.A based STONES THROW RECORDS. For ten years the Stones Throw label have been digging deep in dark places. But unlike much of the leftfield hip hop scene, that hasn't meant getting lost up their own arses. Now with the release of this outstanding CD / DVD collection, Stones Throw shed some new light on their sound with a both an exclusive mix from Peanut Butter Wolf and an eye-opening music video collection, many of which have never seen the light of day.
Needless to say, covering a label's entire collection on one CD is difficult, especially considering that the Stones Throw roster epitomizes idiosyncrasy. Label owner Peanut Butter Wolf's track selection however, is impeccable as he knits a seamless mix from a truly colorful yarn. From Oh No, J.Rocc and the continually awe-inspiring Madlib, Wolf twists the history of jazz, soul, funk and even psychedelic rock into the new and unrecognisable future. If the mix CD doesn't clearly illustrate the Stones Throw sound, the accompanying DVD fills any gaps. From Madvillain's dazzling Stan Lee cartoon free-for-all on "All Caps" to the choreographed breakin' and poppin' on Breakestra's fiery "Getcho Soul Together", the videos provide a free-spirited alternative to the music video status quo. Stones Throw's habit of commissioning videos MTV will never play finally pays off via DVD. As Peanut Butter Wolf says, "I tried to include a lot of stuff that's never been seen," which certainly holds true for almost everything here.
Stones Throw DVD 101 is available now through Basement Digs/Creative Vibes
