tru thoughts
Mr Scruff on the album:
"I've known Rob Luis for 5 or 6 years playing at Etch and doing the radio show every month. We've got a similar attitude and Rob's always supported good music, so when they asked me to put together a compilation I was happy to be the first one to do it really - it's sort of my seal of approval for what Tru Thoughts do. Having a free reign was quite tricky, as I'm into so much stuff that choosing one of each was a nightmare. So I decided to just stick to reggae - I used to do a varied dub night in Manchester and so doing an accessible reggae album seemed a good idea - get interesting stuff across to people who've possibly never heard it before. So there's obscure stuff on there I spent a long time looking for, and some wonky big dub wobblers too...Treva Whateva and I have been into this stuff since the late eighties. We'd find these amazingly creative old dub records, mad mixtures of massive heavy bass and bizarre noises, and sit there going 'Hoo hoooo, that sounds like a big wobbly man'. I've mixed it up on the LP though, there's a few recognizable dancehall classics, some things that might be quite surprising - reggae acts doing soul and sort of pre-disco stuff - and some underrated current acts too. It's my take on reggae in its widest sense."

"A melting pot of superb reggae." Straight No Chaser
"Mr. Scruff tickles indeed with some heavy, heavy basslines and some soul-drenching dub. A suitable selection. Play it loud." DJ Magazine
"A fine selection mixing old and new, weird and wonderful." The Wire
"A take on reggae which skanks its way through everything from the boogie down prescription to contemporary sounds. A supreme selection." Amazon.co.uk
