VARIOUS ARTISTS - Longrain Music

Welcome to Longrain music - a tempting platter of deep dub-a-licious jazzy beats compiled from only the freshest local and imported ingredients.

Renowned for it's award-winning Thai/ Chinese influenced cuisine, Longrain has become one of the shining stars on the Australian restaurant scene. Also famed for it's canny cocktail list (the current vogue for muddled cocktails, or "stick-drinks", got its start at Longrain) and incisive wine selection, Longrain is as much a sought after destination with international travellers as it is with well-heeled locals in the know. Space, comfort, stylish design. Great food, inspirational drinks, expert service. And weaving it all together, some mighty nice tunes.

Longrain owner, Sam Christie, is keenly aware of the contribution good music makes to a gratifying bar/dining atmosphere.

"We like it eclectic, laid-back, funky, loungy," says Christie. "It's attention to detail that counts, that's why we employ DJs to keep our music fresh."

And fresh it is on Longrain music, a craftily compiled CD that lets the listener sample some of the tempting musical treats regularly spinning on the decks at Longrain.

"We tried to get the feeling of a typical night at Longrain," says project producer and resident DJ, Clive Smith.

"Catching up with friends over a few nice bevvies in the bar and then you're ushered down to one of the communal dining tables to share some crispy golden trout or maybe a duck curry. And after, kicking back again in the bar, just chatting and listening to super-chilled tunes that you won't be hearing in many other places."

With five of the tracks on Longrain music by local artists, and contributions on a few others from Australians, this collection vividly reflects the Longrain ethic. Fresh, exotic, outside the square. Warm, relaxed, uplifting.

Adelaide girl, Nicole Graham, lends vocal smoke on French deep/jazzy/house-man Llorca's Indigo Blues. Sydney duo Groovescooter awaken us to new possibilities on a Flokati Rug at night. EON dig the moon with a track from their fantastic new album The Great Indoors. Local electronica ace, Deepchild, aka Rick Bull, weighs in with an exclusive-to-this-album mix of Struttin' in Dementia, one of the standout tracks from his current long-player. Heard The Bird? Listen up on Tao of Dub. Oh, and if you're wondering who "dmdp" is, they're our little secret from Bronte.

Other tracks were sourced high and low from around the world of good-groove tunes. Sweden's star lounge-jazzer's, Koop, give us Modal Mile, with beat-era prose poetry by the one and only Earl Zinger (of Galliano fame). The Tarantulas take us into '60's Left Bank cabaret on Club Comtemporaine. Swiss groover, Minus 8, does the Latin bit. Londoners, Smith and Mighty, open up on Flash of Joy. Italian DJ/producers, Barrio Jazz Gang, get us in the mood with muted horns and toe-tappin' beats on Spectrum. And not forgetting the Netherlands, (how could we) Alex Cortiz offers the superb down-beat smoker, Fingerprints.

And there you have it. Longrain music. Proud to be released on new Creative Vibes imprint, Instinctive Travels. It's a journey that begins on a lounge at Sydney's down-town Longrain, and takes you via some tasty ports-of-call to somewhere you've always wanted to be.
