Here comes the next exciting release from the Basement Digs label, the long anticipated debut from multi-talented producer and MC, Oh No. Underground production hero Madlib’s younger brother! Son of 70s soul singer Otis Jackson, nephew to legendary jazz trumpeter Jon Faddis, younger brother to heralded and prolific producer Madlib, Oh No the Disrupt has had music pumping through his veins since his birth some 25 years ago. And not just the soul-steeped jazz and eclectic beats of his family’s legacy either. This Oxnard, California native has rhymes too—spitting surprisingly gruff-voiced lyrics, part poet, part gangster, over his own melodic beats that stand out even among the bevy of talent at Stones Throw Records.
Of course, the fact that Oh No possesses such musical genius should come as no surprise to anyone familiar with his history. He grew up surrounded by the sounds of his father and uncle, jazz-great Dizzy Gillespie’s handpicked selector. “I remember going to see my uncle and Dizzy Gillespie in Oakland,” Oh No recounts. “My uncle even gave me one of his trumpets. To be around that music when I was young was amazing.” No doubt, Oh No’s talents are hardly unknown among his peers. The beatmaker/rapper is currently producing for the likes of AG, Wise Intelligent (of Poor Righteous Teachers notoriety) and CL Smooth. He’s blessed joints for Acrobatic, and Def Jux’s Mr. Lif and Murs as well. It’s this first LP that will set the stage for what will surely be a remarkable career, just like those of his father, his uncle and his brother.
Oh No's The Disrupt' is availble now through Basement Digs/Creative Vibes
