CONNIE PRICE & THE KEYSTONES Wildflowers

Let’s face it – new funk, recorded in the style of 60s and 70s funk gods like James Brown, the JBs and The Meters – is passé. With the exception of the a select few (such as the awesome Dapkings, hip-hop schooled Breakestra, the forward-leaning Poets of Rhythm or the chaotic Malcolm Catto), most newly recording heavy-funk bands could do better than recording distorted drums and chicken-scratch guitar: they could return to the garage to seek out a new direction for their funky fury.

Thankfully Connie Price & The Keystones, a supergroup comprised of the best musicians Los Angeles can offer, have teamed up with the finest in new funk to offer an alternative. Steeped in the styles of American funk and soul, Jamaican rocksteady and roots reggae, Afrobeat, New Orleans second-line rhythms, 60's-70's jazz and soundtrack music, the ensemble has created a debut that melds together their favorite music into a style all their own.

Primarily a guitarist, producer/leader Dan Ubickspent years in Los Angeles' own new funk ensemble, the Breakestra, and contributed to records by Macy Gray, DJ Babu and Madlib. For Wildflowers, he’s teamed up with members of Breakestra, Antibalas, Dap Kings, Poets of Rhythm, Macy Gray, Soul Destroyers and old school funk outfits Funk Inc. and L.A. Carnival. The result is nothing less than breathtaking – an album of scope and great dynamic, the soundtrack to the best film you’ll never see.
